METHOCARBAMOL (Robaxin)

Why has my veterinarian prescribed this medication?

Methocarbamol is a centrally active muscle relaxant given to dogs and cats as adjunctive therapy of acute inflammation of skeletal muscle and to reduce muscular spasms. It is used most commonly in dogs with intervertebral disk disease.

How do I give this medication?

  • Give this medication to your pet as directed by your veterinarian. READ THE LABEL CAREFULLY.
  • If the medication is a liquid, measure the dose with reasonable care and shake well.
  • Try to give this medication at about the same time each day.
  • DO NOT give the pet more medicine than directed or more often than directed.
  • Try not to miss any doses.

What do I do if I miss giving a dose?

  • Give the dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with the regular schedule. Do not give the pet two doses at once.

How do I store this medication?

  • Keep this medication out of the reach of children.
  • Store this medicine in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Store away from heat and direct sunlight.

Potential side effects

  • Side effects can include sedation, salivation, vomiting, lethargy, weakness and ataxia (incoordination when walking).
  • Because of its CNS depressant effects, may impair the abilities of working animals.
  • May cause urine to have a darker color.

Possible drug interactions

  • Make sure to tell your veterinarian other medication that you are giving to your pet.
  • Additive depression may occur when given with other CNS depressant agents.

Contact your veterinarian if your pet experiences any unusual reactions when different medications are given together.
