CHINCHILLA CARE

Recommendations:

  • Sand bath—if your chinchilla does not like the standard chinchilla sand we recommend trying or alternating with this homemade formula:  1 cup bird grit or gravel mixed with 1 teaspoon talcum.

  • Clean the cage weekly.  Recommend changing the bottom to where ½ of it is wire so that droppings and urine can drop through.  Kitty litter can be placed below the wire to absorb the waste material. This will create a cleaner environment and your chinchilla should have less health problems.

  • Check the sipper bottle daily to make sure that it is not plugged.  Replace water regularly.

  • Food—Give 1 level tablespoon of chinchilla feed (or rabbit feed) twice daily.  You also need to give a handful of hay at each meal time.  This is essential for proper digestion of food.

  • Recommend wood blocks for chewing.  Their teeth grow continuously and the wood is needed to wear their incisors down.

  • Recommend examinations every 6 months for preventive health care.  Monitor for pellet production, appetite, discharges, sneezing/coughing, inactivity, and diarrhea.  On males it is important to look for hair rings around the penis and remove them.

Please do not hesitate to call should you have any concerns or questions.  Thank you.
