At this time in his/her life we need to start being concerned about early diagnosis or detection of internal problems that a physical examination will not detect. For example, without appropriate testing we would not be able to diagnose diabetes, liver or kidney disease, bladder infections, or other more serious problems like heart disease that can occur without obvious symptoms or signs.
We care about your pet’s health as much as you do, and we want your pet to live as long as possible without unnecessary suffering or illness. We also know that it is much less costly to detect problems early rather than wait and treat an illness that becomes more advanced later on.
Because of this we are recommending a comprehensive health screening blood test to assess how well individual organs are functioning and to diagnose systematic disorders such as diabetes, bacterial and viral infections, anemia, and clotting problems. A urinalysis is a valuable index of kidney function as well as an all-purpose screen for systemic disease. A fecal analysis is used to detect parasites and parasite eggs. Microscopic examination may reveal unusual bacteria and protozoa, red and white blood cells, and or reductions in organ size, accumulation of fluid, and early tumor detection. An electrocardiogram is need to fully assess cardiac function. If you have any questions about these tests, please feel free to discuss them with the doctor.
